How To Doll Up Your Derby for less than $10
I LOVE THE KENTUCKY DERBY. My cousin Terrence married his wife on Derby Day when I was about 15 at Lumen Private Event Space (little did I know I'd be back working there in the future!) and between the ceremony and reception, all of the guests went to a restaurant/bar that his friend owned to watch the Derby and hang out as a group before hitting the dance floor to celebrate TJ and Lauren all night. It was such a blast I've been obsessed with Derby Day ever since.
This year, Derby lovers get double the fun: Cinco De Mayo falls on the same day (THIS SATURDAY)! I made a really simple, super cute craft to get you into celebration mode and prepare you for a win this weekend . . . Cinco De Derby Day flower crowns!
You’ll need: -a hot glue gun -paper money
-scissors -fake flowers -horse toy(s) -a thick round “wreath” to secure the flowers and horsies to (mine was called the natural willow round wreath found in the fake flower section of the dollar tree) *all but the glue gun can be found at the Dollar Tree! Step 1: Put the wreath on your head and determine where you would like to place the toy horse. Be sure to consider the toy’s weight : I may or may not have had to decapitate some of the heavier horse toys to keep the crown from tilting and falling over 🙁 sorry lil guys! This is also why you need a secure wreath and not just floral wire so the horse has a stronger structure to adhere to. Step 2: Glue the horse to the wreath and hold tight until it’s totally secure. Watch half an episode of FRIENDS or something while you fasten the horse Step 3: Glue the flowers onto the wreath (as many of as little as you like)! Step 4: Cut the paper money if it’s too big (mine was ) and glue on to the side of the wreath behind a large flower so the money looks like it’s coming out from behind the flower.
That’s it! It takes no time flat and you’ll be off to the races! Derby on, chicas 💋
