Inspired by Her: Fitness Guru Sara Thomas

If you're like me, the heavy rain the Midwest has gotten the past few weeks has led to long days spent as a human fire hazard hovering over the space heater at work and contemplation of skipping the gym "just this once". Mother Nature seems to have some sort of grudge against us, but spring/summer weather is coming whether you believe it or not! Opening Day has come and gone, Mr. Sun came out for over an hour this morning and Facebook ads are currently blinding me with beautiful, colorful, teenie weenie bikinis and sundresses 😩 My poor, poor wallet.

Cue: PANIC MODE. Brides and women all over are frantically Pinning 3-day cleanses, 2-week workout plans that will "get you flat abs FAST" and dreading their next dress fitting. I totally get it! Whether you're #SweatingForTheWedding or just want to get healthy because it's good for your mind, body and soul, you could definitely benefit from reading on about my friend and fitness guru Sara.

But before I go any further, I want to make it clear that SGO is not endorsing the idea that you have to lose weight to be a beautiful bride. That's simply not the case. You're stunning Just The Way You Are. That being said, what we're hearing from SGO brides, besties and the general bridal public is that it's worth it to put a little extra sweat into the months leading up to the big day in order to look and feel your absolute best at the altar.

Enter: Personal Trainer, Fitness and Nutrition Specialist, Competitor and Mama who rocks abs like it's nobody's business - Sara Thomas!

She's a total boss and that's why I asked her to write a guest blog about fitness + weddings. So without further ado, I'll just stop blabbing and let her give you the lowdown:

Most little girls dream of their wedding day for as long as they can remember, I’m pretty sure I spent hours drawing sketches of what I wanted my wedding dress to look like when I was probably eight years old! It’s a truly magical day, with all eyes on you, and you want to look your ABSOLUTE best! Everyone knows the actual day is usually a blur for most brides, but the lovely photos are displayed forever! I’ve been a personal trainer since 2010 and I’ve worked with numerous soon-to-be brides get prepared for that special day in the beautiful white dress.

I can’t talk enough about the benefits of getting into a solid workout and nutrition routine during this time. If you would like to drop a few pounds (or more), the earlier you can get started, the better. Weight loss is best maintained when lost at a slow and steady pace - I usually shoot for no more than 1-2 pounds per week for my clients. Research shows that when people lose weight at a more rapid pace they are much more likely to gain it back (and even gain extra!) pretty quickly. I recommend getting in a few interval cardio sessions throughout the week, as intervals are a great way to blast fat and calories in a shorter amount of time. As far as toning goes, most brides are looking to tone their shoulders, arms, and back in specific. However, if your honeymoon involves relaxing on the beach during the day and slipping into teeny lingerie during the nights then don’t forget about your legs, glutes, and abs too! Focus on weight training with moderate weights (not too light) and hitting higher reps (somewhere between 15-20). Finding the right weight to lift can be confusing, so my rule of thumb is that you should begin to feel challenged, or slightly fatigued, when you’ve got about 3-5 reps left. For example, if you have to perform 15 reps of bicep curls, by the time you get to 12 it should be somewhat challenging, but you should be able to finish all 15 without losing proper form.

Proof you can birth a beautiful child and get right back to your goals - Sara competed last year in a fitness competition and is currently prepping to do it all again!

Not all benefits of working out and eating clean are physical, don’t forget about your skin, hair, and nails! Don’t wait until the week before your big day to hydrate, eat whole foods, and take a daily multivitamin! The bottom line is that wedding planning can be super stressful (hopefully not as stressful if you have an amazing wedding planner on your team to help you out like Saving Grace Occasions) but finding time to destress, clear your head, sweat, and put down your phone for an hour is far more beneficial than most people even realize!
